John Estaugh Hopkins was the first child of Ebenezer and Sarah (Lord) Hopkins, born on 6 May 1738. He was named, obviously, for John Estaugh, who was Ebenezer's father, for all intents and purposes, from about the age of five. That was when John and Elizabeth (Haddon) Estaugh brought Ebenezer to West New Jersey, and raised him to be their son and heir.
John E. Hopkins married Sarah Mickle, daughter of William and Sarah (Wright) Mickle, on 19 May 1762. They had 7 children, who became the leading line of Hopkinses in and around Haddonfield. John E. Hopkins was a planter and leading figure in the Haddonfield area. He was an overseer of the poor and of the highways, and a commisioner of appeals.1 He lived in the Estaugh plantation house until he retired in 1800, when he moved to a new house he had built at 65 Haddon Avenue in Haddonfield. The management of the plantation he left to his sons James and William.2 He built the Haddon Grist Mill in 1783, and Birdwood, a house for his son William, in 1794.3 Present-day pictures of these two houses may be seen at this address. John also donated the land on which the Haddonfield Free School was built in 1786. He was an influential member of the Friends and the local government.4
John died on 3 Feb 1806. Sarah died on 4 Sep 1812.
