Scout Troop 33

Me as a Boy Scout in Pawhuska

I was a member of Boy Scout Troop 33 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma when I was a boy. The Pawhuska troop is one of three which claim to be the oldest in the U. S. The others are in Burnside, Kentucky and in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. This Web site says that "Pawhuska's troop had the honor of being Troop No. 1 in the Boys Scouts of America, and has the certificate on exhibit in the Historical Museum in the Scout Room. ... Troop No. 33 is a continuance of the original first Boy Scout troop in America." The troop is part of the Osage Hills District, Cherokee Area Council.

My troop met in the Methodist Church in Pawhuska. The Scoutmaster was Mr. Nichols; he was a good Scoutmaster, and made scouting fun for us. I enjoyed being a Scout, especially going on camping trips to Camp McClintock near Osage Hills State Park and Camp Cherokee near Grand Lake. I worked my way up to First Class rank. When my son William was old enough, I wanted him to be a Scout, too. He also enjoys going to camps, and has fun with the other boys in the troop meetings.
