FHL #6906115 Marriages, 1639-1753
Drawing of St. Olave's Church |
In trying to find out more about my Hopkins ancestors, I've been transcribing information from the records of parishes near where they lived: St. George the Martyr in Southwark. This page is about the parish church of St. Olave, which was located very near the Thames, and close to London Bridge. It is one of the oldest parishes south of the river, and one that was mentioned in a number of the records I've found relating to the Hopkinses and related families.
"The parish of St. Olave is bounded on the north by the river Thames, whence it extends in an irregular line towards the Dover Road, separating Bermondsey from Rotherhithe and Deptford parishes; it enters Bermondsey Street by Snow's Fields, and proceeds thence to St. Saviour's (once called Savory) Dock.
St. Olave's, like many other parishes in the suburbs of London, having been greatly increased in the number of its inhabitants, in 1732 one of the fifty new churches provided by the Act of Queen Anne was built for the district of Horselydown, which was made a separate parish by an Act of Parliament passed in the following year, and to which was given the name of St. John.
The parish church of St. Olave stands on the north side of Tooley Street, near its western end; and with the exception of the south side, is concealed from public observation."

These are the St Olave Parish records in the collection of
the Southwark Local History Library:
* Christenings 1639 to 1665, 1685 to 1884
* Marriages 1639 to 1665, 1685 to 1864, 1903 to 1918
* Burials 1639 to 1665, 1685 to 1853
The following are marriages I transcribed from FHL film #6906115, St. Olave Marriages 1639-1753, 1876-1885. As with the other neighboring parishes, I found very few Hopkinses listed in these records.
