Unidentified Hopkinses

In researching the William and Katheryn Hopkins family from Southwark, I've come across some Hopkinses I can't identify. They may or may not be related. I'm listing these "stray" Hopkinses below in hopes someone might have researched them and can identify them for me. If you recognize any of these people, please contact me via this link: ahopkins@alum.mit.edu

St Martin in the Fields

From St. Martin in the Fields Church Records

John, a son of William and Winifred Hopkins was baptized at St. Martin in the Fields Church on 4 Mar 1632.
A second son, William, was baptized by this couple on 31 Aug 1634. A third son, also William, was baptized on 8/6/1637.
At the same church, a William Hopkins and wife Katherin baptized a daughter Anna on 10/2/1639.
Again, at the same church, a William Hopkins and wife Catherin baptized a son William on 11/24/1669. (See note below.)

Note: It's very tempting to think that the William and Catherin who baptized a son William on 11/24/1669 at Martin in the Fields, are the same couple who married at St. Marylebone on 7 Jan 1668, and are also William and Katheryn Hopkins of Southwark.

About 22 months elapsed between these two events, which would be a long time for a first child to wait, but this might not have been the first. Another problem is that William and Katheryn's first son William recorded in the Quaker records was born on 20 Aug 1670. But again, he may not have been their first, just the first entered into the Quaker records.

However, it seems like a long shot to say that these three couples are in fact all the same couple. Some pretty convincing proof needs to be found to justify this tempting theory. (back)

This Hopkins family doesn't appear to be related to William's family, and the naming pattern is different. They also live in a different parish.

Edward also isn't a part of the William Hopkins family. William the Younger had a son named Edward, but he was born in 1702.

I've compiled a list of Hopkins marriages in St. George's parish in Southwark. The list is a little long for this page, so I'm providing a link to a separate page in rtf format. This file lists marriages from the early 1600s through the 1680s.

Following is a translation of an entry I found in the PCC Administrations. It is for a William Hopkins, who apparently died in or before 1650.

Prob 6/25 Folio 165, 1650
William Hopkins
On the ninth day [of a month and year specified in an earlier entry] issued forth a commission to Thomas Glover, one of the creditors of William Hopkins, late of the parish of Saint George Southwark deceased, to administer the goods, rights and credits of the said deceased, he being sworn well etc [to administer the same]. [Account to be submitted by the feast of St] Blaise Inventory.

I've composed a list of Hopkins wills and administrations for Southwark and vicinity, which is contained in an rtf file. Please click on this link to access it.
