Register Report
I've prepared a register report in pdf format showing the descendants of Benjamin and Rebecca Hopkins. It contains the basic information about them which I've collected as of this update. Please look for future revisions as more information becomes available.
I want to add a few words and links regarding Benjamin E. Hopkins, grandson of Benjamin and Rebecca. Benjamin was an active member of the Friends meeting, and was well thought of by them and in the business community. He was appointed a clerk of the Indiana Yearly Meeting in 1881. He had served as a Leutenant in the Union Army, and was an Assisstant Teller in the Fidelity Bank of Cincinnati. Unfortunately, he became involved, I think innocently, in the speculation in wheat futures by others in the bank, and was charged with misapplication of bank funds and sentenced to prison. He was pardoned by President Cleveland, returned home from prison, and died that same night.
The New York Times carried a story about his trial and death (with a couple of glaring errors).
BENJAMIN E. HOPKINS DEAD.: RELEASED FROM JAIL FRIDAY TO DIE AT HOME YESTERDAY. (1889, Jan 08). New York Times (1857-1922)
There waa also a story from the Newark (Ohio) Daily Advocate about his return from prison, A surprising number of papers around the country had stories about this case.
The Friends' Intelligencer said this about his death:
Deaths
Hopkins. -- At his residence, Cincinnati, Second-day, First month 7th, 1889, Benjamin E. Hopkins.
Of a kind and generous nature, ardent temperament, and possessing many qualifications fitting him for much usefulness, he was wrecked by becoming entangled in the speculations of the day. May those who knew and esteemed him look with a charitable eye on his failings. "Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."
J. M. T., Jr.
--from Friends' Intelligencer and Journal, 1889, Vol 46/17, p. 41.
