The Pate Families of Southwark
One of William Hopkins' friends was a fellow Quaker, Robert Pate. He was mentioned in William's 1705 will as a "loving friend," leaving him three pounds for the use of the poor of the Friends meeting. He also named Pate overseer of his will and left him twenty shillings. When William's son Benjamin was admitted to the Vintner's Company, Robert Pate, carpenter, was one of those signing the document.
I've found several documents concerning the Pates. They were mentioned in the records of the Friends, as well as in records of the Distillers Company. Details of those documents are below.
- 12 day 5 mo (July) 1695: Joseph Kidder of Wallingford, Berks, Practioner of Phisick, son of William Kidder, late of Wickham, Burks, Mealman deceased, and Sarah Pate, daughter of Robert Pate of Georges Parish in Southwark, Carpenter were married in the Parke meeting in Southwark. Relations: Dorothy Kidder, Robt. Pate, Elizabeth Pate, Mary Buy, Dorothy Kidd, Robt. Pate jun., Thomas Dell jun., Mary Dell, Philip Humphrey, Eliz. Ward, Richd. Humphrey, fferd. Simpson, &c
- 3 Jul 1705: Joseph Pate, son of Thomas Pate, Citizen and Carpenter, was admitted to the freedom of the city by patrimony. Witnesses: Jno Hurst, Joynor; Thomas Marsh, carpenter; James Dav?, joynor; Paul Cowley, carpenter; David Turner, couper; and Joseph Russell, carpenter. (Note: the connection, if any, of these Pates to the Pates of Southwark is unclear.)
- 4 Jul 1723: Robert Pate, son of Robert Pate, late of Southwark, Surrey, carpenter, was apprenticed to John Bockett, Citizen and Distiller, for seven years. Signed by Jona. Nichols.
- 10 day 9 mo 1730: Robert Pate of Saint Saviours Parish (So Called) in the Burough of Southwark, London Distiller, son of Robert Pate of St. Georges Parish (So Called) in Southwark, London, deceased, and Jane Fordham, daughter of John Fordham of Dunmore in the County of Essex, Clockmaker, were married.
- 10 Jun 1731: Richard Pate, wid., married Mary Ede, wid., Christchurch, Southwark.
