I've transcribed a number of birth, marriage, and burial records from the Southwark Monthly Meeting in Southwark, Surrey, England. I then transcribed records about some of the same surnames from the London & Middlesex Quarterly Meeting records. These records are contained in the following films from the Family History Library:

The following files are not a complete record of these meetings. I selected people who were directly or indirectly connected to the Hopkins or Haddon families in Southwark, and especially those who were mentioned in William Hopkins' will. However, they do represent a sizable percentage of the total records, and will, I hope, prove to be a valuable resource to people studying these meetings.
I've made this data available in plain text format for ease of use. The file sizes are shown for each file. These text files can be displayed by your browser, and can be saved to your disk for later study.

I've studied the records of the Hopkins family and of several other families, trying to understand the relationships and to find any connections among them. This page concentrates on Southwark and records from the London & Middlesex Quarterly Meeting. I've also assembled information about Hopkins connections with people in East London and nearby Essex. There is some redundancy, but both pages should be read as there is some information unique to each.
Husband: Thomas Alcock
Resided: 1701 in Tuckahoe, Maryland
Occupation: 1703 Shop Keeper
Father: William Alcock, dec'd, weaver, of Rollston, Staffordshire, England
Wife: Hannah Burtonwood
Resided (family): 1703 in Walthamstow, Essex, England
Married: 19-Aug-1701 in Southwark, Surrey, England
Resided: 1701 in St. George's Parish, Southwark, Surrey
Father: Henry Burtonwood, dec'd, yeoman, of Acton Grange, Cheshire, England
M Child 1: Burtonwood Alcock
Born: 27-Apr-1703 in Walthamstow, Essex, England
In William Hopkins' will, he refers to William Alcock of Horninglow, Staffordshire, as a cousin. Rolleston (where William Alcock is from) is about a mile from Horninglow. One of the witnesses to the marriage of Sarah Hopkins (William and Katherine's daughter) to Thomas Fellows was an Elizabeth Alcock.
Marriage Record:
Groom: Thomas Alcock, Planter, Tuckahoo, Maryland
Bride: Hannah Burtonwood of Georges Parish, Southwark
Marriage Date: 19d 6m 1701
Relations: Kathn. Hopkins, Benj. Hopkins, Sar. Fellows, Mary Johnson, Elizth. Allcock, Susan Bosley, Wm. Bosley.
Witnesses: Wm. Hopkins, Robt. Peate (Pate?), Thos. Poor, Elizth. Wassey, Jno. Gopsill Junr.
Note: There was a Tuckahoe Quaker meeting on the Eastern Shore of Maryland starting about 1679. A Thomas Allcock, wife Elizabeth, and daughter Elizabeth are mentioned in the Third Haven MM records in 1687. Thomas is also mentioned frequently in the Talbot County land records.
This marriage took place in Southwark at Horselydown with the Hopkins family in attendance as relations or witnesses. Katherine Hopkins was listed as a relation, along with her son Benjamin and daughter Sarah (Fellows). William Hopkins was listed as a witness, so I assume that it was Katherine who was related to the Alcocks. For more about this family, please see this page.
In his will, William Hopkins referred to Hannah Bosley of Wanstead, Essex, as his kinswoman. There were Bosleys mentioned in the Southwark records, but no Hannah. Susan and William Bosley were present as relations at the marriage above. Susan Bosley was also a relation at the marriages of Sarah Hopkins to Thomas Fellows, and of Benjamin Hopkins to Sarah Haddon. There were no Bosley records in the London & Middlesex QM registers I transcribed.
This family appeared to be close to Benjamin and Sarah Hopkins' family. I've created a page (healey.htm) which contains some speculations about this relationship. The Healeys had 18 children, a fact I had trouble believing at first. But the records seem to bear this out. What an amazing woman!

Giles Stuchbury was one of the witnesses to William Hopkins' will in 1705. He was one of the early members of the meeting, whose name appeared often among the witnesses in the marriage records.
Locations around Northampthoshire |
The surname Stuchbury is a variant spelling of Stotesbury, which was also the name of a village in Northamptonshire, which is now spelled Stuchbury. To find out more about this surname and the village's history, please click on this link. Stuchbury is located about 2 miles south of Sulgrave Manor (the ancestral home of George Washington), about 5 miles north of Brackley, and about 8 miles southwest of Farthingstone.
When Giles married his third wife, the record says that his father was Giles Tuchbury from Fucott, Oxon. Foscott was a small village northeast of Buckingham, and about 12 miles southeast of Farthingstone. It was also about 9 miles southeast of Stotesbury. I suspect that the Stuchbury and Hopkins families were connected in some way in Northamptonshire, before they moved to Surrey.

There was a second Stuchbury family in Southwark, that of John Stuchbury and Ann Collins. They also lived in Saviours parish, and John was also a cooper, like Giles. But I've found no proof that they were related. John's mother was named Amy; she died in Saviours parish in 1674 at the age of 62. No information about his father was found in the records.

This was one of the early families in the Southwark records. I could find no connection in these records with the Hopkins family except for being often at the same marriage ceremonies as witnesses. One possible connection comes from the 1692 marriage of a William Ward to Elizabeth Haddon, sister of John Haddon, in Northamptonshire. On 13d 1m 1709/10 John Estaugh was given a certificate by the Newton, New Jersey Monthly Meeting to travel to William Ward's home in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire (Southwark MSS, p. 90, Friends Library, London).
Anthony and Sarah Ward lived in Olaves parish, where most of their children were born, but their daughter Jane was born in Chipping Wickham, Buckinghamshire, which is near where William Hopkins, Junior lived after he married.

The Warners were another Southwark family that had a Northamptonshire connection. Warners were mentioned in the Quaker records in Northamptonshire, London, and Southwark. Isaac Warner was probably born in Northamptonshire, and was recorded as being a Cooper in the London & Middlesex QM records. His children were born in Whitechapel, and most lived in Southwark. Following is a register report for Isaac and those descendants I've found.
1. Isaac Warner was born about 1636. He died on 2 Jul 1704 in St. Mary Magdalene Parish, Southwark, Surrey, England.
Isaac was employed as Cooper. He signed a will on 4 May 1704 in St. Mary Magdalene Parish, Southwark, Surrey, England.
Isaac married Anne .
* She might have been Anne Packwood. She was described as his niece in the 1716 will of Simeon Packwood (Simeon Packwood, Northampton, 20 April 1717, PROB11/557). Thanks to Graham Ward for sharing this will with me.
They had the following children:
+ 2 M i. Simeon Warner was born on 3 Jul 1669. He died on 26 Aug 1754.
3 M ii. Isaac Warner was born on 15 Feb 1670/1671 in Whitechapel, Middlesex County, England.
4 F iii. Anne Warner was born on 15 Sep 1672 in Whitechapel, Middlesex County, England.
5 M iv. John Warner was born on 22 Dec 1674 in Whitechapel, Middlesex County, England.
6 F v. Margaret Warner died after 8 Oct 1716.
Margaret married Josiah Lane son of Josiah Lane on 16 Sep 1698 in London, England.
Josiah resided in 1698 in St. George's Parish, Southwark, Surrey, England. He was employed as Cheesemonger in 1698.
+ 7 F vi. Anne Warner was born on 12 Jun 1677. She died after 8 Oct 1716.
2. Simeon Warner (Isaac) was born on 3 Jul 1669 in Whitechapel, Middlesex County, England. He died on 26 Aug 1754 in Southwark, Surrey, England. He was buried on 30 Aug 1754 in Southwark, Surrey, England.
Simeon was employed as Timber Merchant.
Simeon married Anna ---- .
They had the following children:
+ 8 F i. Anna Warner was born on 10 Jun 1695.
9 M ii. Isaac Warner was born on 2 Feb 1697 in Southwark, Surrey, England. He died on 2 Apr 1697 in Southwark, Surrey, England.

Note: Jacob and Anna Warner's first child, Simeon, was born in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire. It's also interesting that Simeon was born in Hardingstone, because all the other Warner births I recorded from the Northamptonshire records were from Kettering.

Elizabeth Ward (below) may have been a sister of Anthony Ward, but no evidence of their parents or of a connection between them was found in these records. They were born in about the same year.
William Hopkins was one of the witnesses to this marriage (the relations were not listed separately). This is the first marriage in the records where William was present. Mary Wasse (possibly the wife of James Wasse, the Surgeon) was a witness at the marriage of Sarah Hopkins (William and Katherine's daughter) to Thomas Fellows.

James Wasse was a surgeon who lived in Clements Lane, London. He was married twice, and had 9 children in total. Even though he was a surgeon, several of his children died from the childhood diseases that were so prevalent at that time.
Quite by accident, I found a record of James Wasse having bought land in Talbot County, Maryland. He made an agreement on 15 Dec 1679 with a Richard Michell, whereby Michell would go to Maryland and manage Wasse's plantation (called Ratcliffe Manor), dividing the profits equally with Wasse. However, Michell apparently didn't keep his side of the bargain, and Wasse had to go to court in 1687 to settle the matter. On 25 Sept 1698, Wasse sold Ratcliffe Manor to Thomas Bartlett, and one of the Maryland witnesses to the sale was Thomas Allcock.

Besides Joseph Wasey and James Wasse, there was a George Wass, who lived in St. Sepulchres Parish, London. There was no indication in the records of his being related, but the name is an unusual one.
These are the names of the women who attended the births of William and Katharine's children in the Southwark records. While this might not indicate a blood or marriage relationship, it does indicate a connection of friendship or proximity. It's interesting to note that the same names appear over and over. Most of these women also attended the births of each others' children.
