The Family of Hezekiah
and Martha Griffith Hopkins

Hezekiah Haddon Hopkins was the only child of Haddon and Hannah (Stokes) Hopkins. He was born in 1767, about five months before his father's early death in 1768. He was raised by his mother and her second husband, Abraham Inskeep. When he came of age, he inherited several tracts of land which had been bequeathed to his father by Elizabeth Estaugh.

He married Martha Griffith, daughter of John Griffith and Susanna Young, in 1789. He and Martha had thirteen children, but only eight lived to maturity. The family moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania County in 1799, living near Abington Meeting in Lower Dublin Twp., and in 1810 moving to Philadelphia. Hezekiah worked as an accountant and operated a flour and feed store in Philadelphia, and operated a store in Warren County, Ohio after the family moved there in 1820.

Hezekiah wasn't a birthright Quaker, since his father had been disowned for marrying Hannah Stokes contrary to proper Friends procedures (they were married via a civil marriage license). He and Martha applied for membership and were accepted by the Haddonfield Meeting in 1791. The family continued as Quakers after their move to Ohio, being members of the Miami Monthly Meeting in Waynesville.

Hezekiah died in 1823, only three years after moving to Ohio. He was buried in the Quaker burying ground in Waynesville. His widow and children continued to live in Warren County for a few years, then moved to Camden (Pennville), Jay County, Indiana. Martha died there in 1848, and was buried in the burying ground in Pennville.
